In-Home Education

WHA’s In-Home Education program will build and strengthen the educational, vocation, and daily living knowledge of residents by developing television programs and events that will be transmitted via the WHA master antenna and video production system. Now we can transmit over the local cable provider on Channel 17 to the entire city of Watervliet.

Examples of workshops, seminars and course to be offered through this program include: Drug Prevention programs or Public service accouchements (PSA’s), CPR, How to Keep Kids Off Drugs, Stress Management, Basic First Aid, Aerobics and Fitness, Typing, Start Your Own Business, Seeking Legal Aid in Time of Need, Single Parenting, and computer education.

Our School children help and edit many of the PSA’s and have won national recognition from these productions. Do you want to put announcement on our TV station? it's easy! Click here for a form and fax to our office.

Home Ownership Program

A very new program has just been launched to help tenants purchase their own homes. The WHA is providing technical assistance to any tenant who is credit eligible to buy his or her own home within the Watervliet city limits including credit counseling and home inspection. The program provides those eligible with up to $2,500 in closing costs.

Section 8 Program

The Section 8 Housing Assistance Payments Program helps up to 115 families with rental financial assistance. This programs allows the applicants with the choice to live and/or search for private housing in the city for an apartment. A person living in public housing cannot receive Section 8 unless they want to move out of their existing apartment. You can receive Section 8 rental assistance and live in Van Rensselaer Village. This program will help this family pay for part of the rent to live in this private apartment. The waiting list is much longer maybe up to two years for assistance. If you are interested you can call this office for an application or more information.

Family self-sufficiency Program

WHA has a Family self-sufficiency Program in place, which focuses on the unemployed and underemployed members of the community who have applied to participate in Watervliet’s Section 8 programs. Rental assistance programs are coupled with career and personal counseling, job training and placement, child care, transportation, adult basic education, and literacy training. WHA has 15 family self-sufficiency slots.
